We are back into routine after our Christmas break. This past week I have met with students individually to assess their reading. Students will be put into similar reading level groups and we will meet in small reading groups to support their current reading level. To support reading at home please continue to practice sight words at home on a daily basis. Knowledge of these words is imperative to reading beginner level books. We have also begun to learn some important digraphs. Students have already learned the sh sound and the th sound. In math we are continuing to develop number sense on a daily basis through our calendar activities but in class we are focusing on patterns. Students are creating, continuing, and identifying the rule to various patterns. In social we are starting to discuss belonging to a community. Recently we discussed being a good citizen and in the upcoming week we will be discussing what we can do to take care of our community. In science we have begun a hands on unit called Building Things. Students will have many opportunities to build in class with a variety of students. This unit is not only going to teach students the foundational knowledge needed to build simple structures but it will also develop group work skills and communication skills. Please remember that on Jan 16th we will be going to Fort Calgary for our first field trip. Please be on time and dress for the weather.
